VEX Robotics Team Competes at States

The Wellsville Robotics Teams performed exceptionally well this past weekend at the Northern NYS Regional Championships in Syracuse. Our teams were up against some exceptional competition and represented Wellsville well! Throughout competition, Team 68922B was ranked as high as 12th and ultimately finished 20th overall among the field of 53 teams with a 4-3 record during the qualifying rounds. They also finished 13th overall in the Skills Challenge (a combination of driver-control and autonomous driving sessions), scoring 220 points! Team 14895A finished 42nd overall with a 2-5 record. They finished 14th overall in the Skills Challenge, also scoring 220 points! In one of the highlights of the weekend, both Wellsville teams were allied with one another during a qualifying match, and cruised to a decisive 146-90 victory.

Team 68922B qualified for the alliance selection round (playoffs) and selected to partner with a team from Averill Park High School (east of Albany). They advanced to the round of 16 before almost knocking off the #3 seeded alliance, losing 187-150. Despite not qualifying for the World Championships, the Wellsville Robotics Team received the Judges Award, which is given to a team that is most deserving of special recognition. The criteria for this award includes:

  • Team displays special attributes, exemplary effort, and perseverance at the event
  • Team overcomes an obstacle or challenge and achieves a goal or special accomplishment at the event, or throughout the season
  • Team distinguished itself in some way that does not fit under other award criteria but nonetheless deserves special recognition
  • Students demonstrate teamwork and effective communication skills

We are so proud of this team who took us on an amazing journey! We managed to win three awards at three competitions this year and competed with some of the best schools in the state. Next year’s game will be released at the World Championships in May. Please congratulate Jack Jordan, Ben Jordan, Luke Zakel, Eli Brophy, Kavan O’Grady, Cooper Brockway, and Matt Bittel on an incredible season!
